Extended Health Benefit Coverage
Counselling with me is often covered by extended health benefits, if you have extended health benefits through your work, university/school, your family/spouse, your pension plan, etc. You can look up your extended health benefit plan online or call them, and see if they cover counselling with a Registered Social Worker.

Coverage for many Indigenous people through First Nations Health Authority (FNHA)
I am registered through FNHA, am able to provide counselling and assessments to most Indigenous people (with Status) and have it be covered through FNHA's mental health benefits. If you are Indigenous and do not have Status, you may be able to access counselling through the Indian Residential School Survivor Society.

Coverage for Refugee Claimants, Protected Persons, and certain other groups through the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP)
I am registered through IFHP, am able to provide counselling and assessments to anyone who is registered with the IHFP. IFHP typically funds 4 hours for assessments, and 10 hours for counselling. All people who are Refugee Claimants in Canada, as well as Protected Persons, and some other groups are able to access IFHP for free healthcare in Canada.

I am a registered provider with Work BC. If you are accessing services at Work BC and it is deemed that seeing a counsellor would help addressing and understanding underlaying mental health issues that are a barrier to finding or maintaining employment, you can get referred for free counselling by a case manager at Work BC. You can request counselling with Brett Mason. Work BC typically funds between 5 and 10 sessions.

I am a provider who sees clients through the Resistance Resilience Network for counselling and assessments. This network provides mental health services free of charge to folks facing burnout or other effects of doing anti-oppression/activisit work. If you are engaged in direct action or other anti-oppression work, you can sign up for free counselling (or an assessment) on the Resistance Resilience Network website. You can request to be paired with me.

Gender-Affirming Care (Transgender Care): Including Hormone Readiness Assessments & Surgical Readiness Assessments
There is no one way to be trans, non-binary, gender diverse, gender creative or however else someone might describe their gender. We are all different and unique, and so are our experiences of our genders. I provide general counselling to people of all genders, as well as hormone readiness assessments and surgical readiness assessments for people who are seeking them.

I use an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed approach with hormone readiness and surgical readiness assessments. I have been working professionally with Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender-diverse people on issues of gender and sexuality since 2011.

Hormone Readiness Assessment:
90 Minute Session + 90 minute write-up

Sliding scale available ($250 to $350) *See Sliding Scale policy below
I offer a limited number of free assessments for people facing multiple barriers to hormones and/or surgery

Coverage for Assessments
Assessments are under the scope of counselling, and as such if you have benefits that cover counselling, your assessment would be covered.

Extended Health Benefit Coverage
Assessments with me are often covered by extended health benefits, if you have extended health benefits through your work, university/school, your family/spouse, your pension plan, etc. You can look up your extended health benefit plan online or call them, and see if they cover counselling with a Registered Social Worker. Do not ask your benefits provider if they cover Gender-Affirming Care, as that is a separate billing item that typically covers things like gender-affirming surgeries (like FFS or top surgery) and other gender-affirming procedures such as electrolysis. Assessments are billed to the counselling / mental health benefits.

Nature Therapy:
Walk-and-Talk Sessions
Enjoy walking in nature?
Do you find remote or in-office counselling uncomfortable?
Do you process thoughts and feelings better while moving?
Perhaps Walk and Talk Therapy is for you!

How does it work?
1. First session is in the office or virtual (phone or online) where we discuss therapeutic goals and navigating confidentiality in public.
We'll discuss what might be most comfortable for you if we run into someone you know, as well as other potentials, including how it would feel for you if counselling brought up big feelings while on the trail.
2. The following sessions are in nature in North Cowichan. You choose the pace, when to rest, and move.
Sessions are on local walking trails that are generally busy enough that people are around, but not busy enough for people to overhear. Choose between Ladysmith, Chemainus or Crofton locations.
All locations have free parking, and the trails are flat and would be considered an easy walk.

Who is it for?
Youth age 13+
Adults of all ages
Covid-19 Policy:
Reducing Covid and Respiratory Virus Transmission Risk
This policy applies to In-Person clients only

If you have any cold and flu symptoms, please stay home. Even if you tested negative for Covid-19, please stay home. I will do the same. We can switch to a virtual or phone appointment or reschedule - you decide.

A high quality air filter that can filter out viruses is used in the office

2 windows will be left slightly ajar for improved airflow (all seasons)
There may be times when clients are asked to mask, and I will be wearing an N95 or KN95 mask for all sessions.
On days I see clients in person, there will only be one client in the morning and one client in the afternoon to allow time and air circulation between clients. Doors and windows will be left open to air out the office in-between.

I am open to requests and conversations about how to make this a covid-safer space for you
